Jordan recalls its ambassador from Iran for “consultations”

Jordan recalled its ambassador from Tehran for “consultations” on Monday, accusing Iran of interfering in the affairs of other countries.

According to a Jordanian government spokesman, this action was taken in protest against what was described as "Iranian interference in the internal affairs of neighboring countries, especially the Arab countries bordering the Persian Gulf."

He did not explain specifically what prompted Jordan's decision, but said part of the decision by Amman, which has close ties with Riyadh, was related to last year's attack on Saudi diplomatic facilities in Iran.

A group of pro-government individuals in Iran attacked the Saudi embassy and consulate in Tehran and Mashhad after the execution of a Shiite cleric in Saudi Arabia, prompting Saudi Arabia and a number of its allies to cut ties with Iran. However, Jordan only summoned the Iranian ambassador following the attack.

The Jordanian government spokesman's statement, published in the Jordanian state news agency, stated that "Iran does not respect the sovereignty of Arab countries."

Iranian government officials have repeatedly denied any interference in the internal affairs of regional countries.
