January 2019 protests: Continued arrests and lack of information about the status of Mari Mohammadi

Two weeks after the arrest of former political prisoner Fatemeh (Marie) Mohammadi, there is no information about her fate despite repeated follow-ups, and Ms. Mohammadi's family is worried. Ms. Mohammadi was arrested on Sunday night, January 12, near Tehran's Azadi Square, and taken to an unknown location, during the nationwide protests in January of this year.

According to HRANA News Agency, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, today, Saturday, February 25, 2019, two weeks have passed since the arrest of Fatemeh (Marie) Mohammadi, a former political prisoner. Despite repeated follow-ups, there is no information about her fate, and Ms. Mohammadi's family is worried.

On Sunday night, January 12, 2019, gatherings were held in several cities across the country to commemorate the victims of the downing of a Tehran-Kiev passenger plane over Tehran province by Iranian armed forces. Following these gatherings, a number of demonstrators were arrested. It is believed that Ms. Mohammadi was arrested in this regard, although no source has yet confirmed the connection between Ms. Mohammadi’s arrest and the aforementioned gathering.

As of the time of writing this report, there is no information available about the reasons for his arrest, his place of detention, or the charges brought against him.

It should be noted that Fatemeh (Marie) Mohammadi, a former political prisoner and Christian convert, has a history of arrest and conviction.

He had previously appeared for trial on April 8, 2018, at Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Ahmadzadeh, and was sentenced to 6 months in prison on charges of “membership in missionary groups, Christian activity, and acting against national security through propaganda against the system.” He was finally released from prison in the spring of last year upon completion of his sentence.

This Christian convert, who was studying English translation at the North Tehran branch of Azad University, was unable to enter the university on Saturday, December 20, 2019, and was told, without further explanation, that it was not possible for him to continue his studies at the university.
