Ukraine crisis: US calls for UN Security Council meeting

The United States has called for a meeting of the United Nations Security Council regarding the Ukraine crisis. The US ambassador to the UN announced that the body will hold a public meeting to discuss ways to deal with the Ukraine crisis.

In the wake of tensions between the West and Russia over Ukraine, the United States went to the United Nations Security Council on Thursday, January 27.

Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the United Nations in New York, announced that the organization will hold a public meeting on Monday to discuss ways to deal with the Ukraine crisis.

The American diplomat went on to call Moscow's deployment of more than 100,000 troops on the Ukrainian border and other provocative and destabilizing actions by Russia against Ukraine a clear threat to international peace and security.

The United States and its Western allies are concerned about the possibility of a Russian attack on Ukraine and have repeatedly called in recent days for the country's forces to withdraw from Ukraine's borders.

Russia denies accusations of preparing an invasion of Ukraine. The Kremlin has also called for a halt to NATO expansion in Eastern Europe and the withdrawal of all military forces stationed in Eastern European countries since 1997.
