Tehran Municipality's debt announced as "66 trillion Tomans"

The deputy finance minister of Tehran Municipality has said that the "total debt" of this institution is "66 trillion tomans", of which 6.7 trillion tomans are related to Tehran Municipality's debts to contractors in 2019.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, May 17, Abdul Hamid Emami did not provide further details about the municipality's debts, saying that during Pirouz Hanachi's tenure as mayor of Tehran, "1.7 trillion tomans of debts have been reduced."

He also announced that Tehran Municipality has received 30 trillion tomans in debts from the government and that the Rasa Tejarat Company, affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard, has received 25 trillion tomans in debts.

The deputy finance minister of Tehran Municipality did not mention the total amount of debts owed to the municipality by the government and the IRGC, while the amount of debts owed by companies affiliated with the IRGC had become a controversial issue between the municipality's managers and the IRGC in recent months.

According to Mahmoud Mirlohi, head of the Tehran City Council's Economic Committee, during financial transactions between the two institutions, 1,700 billion tomans of the IRGC's debts to the Tehran Municipality, which were related to 2015, disappeared from the financial minutes of 2016.

Rasa Tejarat Company, which was one of the main financing arms of the IRGC's Quds Force, was dissolved after widespread corruption was revealed, and three of its senior managers, Masoud Mehrdadi, Mahmoud Khakpour, and Mahmoud Seif, were sentenced to two years, five years, and 30 years in prison and fines, respectively.

These individuals have been charged with participating in gang fraud, participating in money laundering, and unlawful withdrawal and appropriation of funds.

In addition to these three people, Issa Sharifi, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf's deputy during his time as mayor of Tehran, was also sentenced to 20 years in prison, a fine, and the return of education funds.
