Blinken in conversation with Lavrov: Opportunity to revive JCPOA is limited

Simultaneously with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian's visit to Moscow, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken held a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart. Russia and the US agreed on Tehran and Washington returning to their commitments under the JCPOA.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced his phone call with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday, October 6, at a press conference in Paris on the sidelines of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) meeting.

Blinken emphasized that the United States and Russia have a common interest in Washington and Tehran returning to their commitments under the JCPOA.

The US Secretary of State also wrote on Twitter that in his conversation with Lavrov, they agreed on the importance of returning to mutual compliance with the JCPOA as soon as possible. Blinken also said that he will continue to engage with Russia to advance US interests.

In his phone call with Lavrov, Blinken also warned that the limited window of opportunity to revive the JCPOA was running out.

This is not the first time the US Secretary of State has raised this issue.

Blinken also warned on Thursday, September 29, that "the time for the Islamic Republic to return to the nuclear agreement is running out, the responsibilities have fallen on Iran's shoulders, and the JCPOA ball is now in Iran's court."

Blinken said US President Joe Biden is keen to bring the United States back into the 2015 agreement, under which the Islamic Republic reduced its nuclear activities in exchange for economic promises.

The Vienna talks, known as the "JCPOA revival" talks, have been suspended since the end of Hassan Rouhani's administration and have not yet resumed despite the coming to power of Ebrahim Raisi.

The Islamic Republic's prolonged return to the Vienna talks has heightened the concerns of Western countries, as Iran has simultaneously intensified its nuclear activities while delaying the date of the talks.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced that the telephone conversation between the foreign ministers of this country and the United States was held at the initiative of Antony Blinken, and the parties discussed the JCPOA and some other issues of mutual interest.

At the same time as this telephone conversation, Lavrov was hosting his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, in Moscow.

Regarding Iran's return to the Vienna talks, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic said: "We had consultations with Lavrov in this regard, and I emphasized that after the conclusion of the discussions, we will soon resume the Vienna talks."

The Iranian Foreign Minister has not commented on Lavrov's phone conversation with Blinken.
