Three "victims of violence" by the Iranian judicial system file complaint against Raisi in New York

Three victims of the Islamic Republic's judiciary during Ebrahim Raisi's presidency filed a lawsuit against him in New York federal court.

The complaint of these three individuals is based on reports of arbitrary arrest, detention, and torture in the Iranian judicial system.

According to news that was officially announced last week, the three plaintiffs announced the filing of their complaint at a press conference at a hotel near Ebrahim Raisi's residence in New York, where he traveled to the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly.

Mehdi Hajati, a former member of the Shiraz City Council, Hamid Babaei, a professor at the Iranian-Belgian University, and Kylie Moore-Gilbert, an Australian researcher and former prisoner in Iran, are the plaintiffs in this case.

Navid Mohebbi, a former political prisoner in Iran and one of the organizers of this news conference, told VOA that although the victims of the Iranian judiciary are numerous, the case against Ebrahim Raisi in the United States will proceed through these three plaintiffs.

Given Ebrahim Raisi's presence in New York, it is possible that, if the judge in the case so decides, a summons will be sent to the current Iranian president's residence to summon him to court.

Shahin Milani, a human rights lawyer who is leading the legal team in this case, says that filing this complaint will challenge the issue of judicial immunity of political officials, especially those who "oppress" their citizens.

US law allows its courts to hear cases of people who have been subjected to torture and arbitrary detention in other parts of the world.

In addition to the lawyers in the case, a number of political and civil activists also participated in the ceremony, which was organized by the National Alliance for Democracy in Iran.

Noor Pahlavi, the daughter of Prince Reza Pahlavi, was also present at the meeting.

Simultaneously with Ebrahim Raisi's presence, a number of Iranians living in the United States have protested in front of the UN headquarters against the free movement of officials of the Islamic Republic, especially the current president of Iran, who is one of the main factors behind the killing of political prisoners in the 1960s in Iran.

A major rally of the Islamic Republic's opponents is scheduled to be held in New York on Wednesday, September 20. Ebrahim Raisi will deliver his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on the same day.

These gatherings have gained greater importance following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who died after being beaten by Ershad patrol officers, and widespread domestic and international protests against police violence against women.

Before Raisi's trip to New York, in recent days, dozens of Democratic and Republican members of the US Congress had written to Joe Biden demanding that a visa not be issued to Raisi.
