Czech Republic replaces Russia on UN Human Rights Council

The UN General Assembly voted for this replacement with 157 votes in favor and 23 abstentions, with no opposition .
The Czech Republic's term of office ends on December 31, 2023. It was the only announced candidate to replace Russia, which was in the second year of its three-year term on the council .
Russia was expelled from the UN Human Rights Council last month for "gross and systematic violations of human rights."
On April 8 of this year, the United Nations General Assembly, in its third extraordinary session on the war in Ukraine, suspended Russia's membership in the Human Rights Council with 93 votes in favor, 24 against, and 58 abstentions .
In this vote, 24 countries, including Algeria, Belarus, Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Russia, Syria, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Vietnam, voted against suspending Russia's membership in the Security Council .
India, Egypt and South Africa were also among the countries that abstained .
