John Kerry's surprise trip to Iraq

US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, on Friday, April 8, in an unannounced visit.

According to FCNN, during this trip, Mr. Kerry is scheduled to meet and discuss the war against the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) group with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

John Kirby, a spokesman for the US State Department, said that Mr. Kerry wants to emphasize America's support for the Iraqi government with this trip.

According to a US State Department spokesperson, Mr. Kerry will also meet and hold talks with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim Jaafari and Nechirvan Barzani, Prime Minister of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, during this trip.

This is Mr. Kerry's first trip to Iraq since September 2014.

Before traveling to Iraq, Mr. Kerry visited Bahrain, where he discussed the conflicts in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen with the foreign ministers of the Gulf states.

During this trip, Mr. Kerry called on Iran to help end the wars in Yemen and Syria.
