Fourth casualty of Iran-Iraq war commits self-immolation in Qom

The Qom News website reported the "self-immolation" of the fourth person injured in the Iran-Iraq war in less than three months in Qom. The person, whose name was not mentioned, died from severe burns.

The website wrote, "This mentally ill veteran, whose percentage of disability was 45 percent, committed self-immolation in his home in Qom last week."

According to this report, despite the person being sent to the Isfahan Accident and Burn Hospital and the efforts of doctors, the treatment measures were unsuccessful.

This is the fourth case of self-immolation by people wounded in the Iran-Iraq war from Qom in less than three months.

The first self-immolation took place on September 2, in front of the entrance to the office of the director general of the "Martyr and Veterans Affairs Foundation" in Qom. The second and third self-immolations also took place in Tehran and Qom, respectively.

On September 24 of this year, officials from the Islamic Republic's "Martyr Foundation" confirmed that a "son of a martyr" in the city of Qom committed self-immolation and died after his request to be hospitalized was rejected.

Iranian media had previously reported that a 47-year-old son of a "martyr" committed self-immolation by pouring gasoline on himself in the Martyr Foundation building in Qom Province.

According to Mohammad Aini, deputy director of the Qom Martyr Foundation, the man had visited a hospital in Qom the night before he set himself on fire and asked to be hospitalized, but "since hospitalization must be done by a doctor's order, the hospital did not accept him."

The official from the Martyr Foundation did not provide further details on this matter, including the reason for this person's request to be hospitalized, and only said that "based on the documents we have," this person was hospitalized "once in the Ardabil Neurological Hospital and four times in the Ali Ibn Abi Taleb Hospital in Qom."

Referring to three previous cases of self-immolation, the Qom News website wrote: "The three self-immolation tragedies within a period of about forty days by veterans under the auspices of the Qom Province Martyrs' and Veterans' Affairs Foundation, which were caused by their absolute desperation and hopelessness in solving their problems, indicate the unsatisfactory performance of the Qom Martyrs' Foundation in providing support services in the fields of treatment, psychological and legal counseling to veterans under its auspices."

The website called for a "review of the management of this department in the province before further incidents occur."
