Iran's prosecutor says recent price hikes "have hidden agendas"

The Attorney General says, "There are reasons behind the recent price increases, and the security and intelligence agencies must follow the reasons behind the price increases."

Mohammad Jafar Montazeri did not give any explanation in this regard and on Monday, November 7, he only said to reporters that "dealing with price gougers who raise prices unregulatedly is one of the duties and responsibilities of the government's penal organization."

The continuing trend of high prices and rampant inflation in Iran is setting new records every day.

According to the latest report from the Statistical Center of Iran, the price of staple foods in the country has increased by an average of more than 60 percent in the past year compared to the previous similar period. Accordingly, the increase in the price of food and beverages in the country during the 12 months ending in October of this year compared to the same period last year (annual inflation) was 61.4 percent, which is a new record in food inflation.

Majid Reza Hariri, head of the Iran-China Joint Chamber of Commerce, told ILNA news agency on November 4 that Iran's economy is at "the most dangerous historical point of inflation in the last four decades" and there is a possibility of "hyperinflation" and severe price increases for goods.

The Ministry of Labor's Center for Statistics and Strategic Information has announced that, on average, out of Iran's 85 million population, 26.7 million people in different deciles struggle with poverty, a significant portion of whom are working-class households.

Government inefficiency, widespread corruption, and economic sanctions, along with the Corona crisis, are among the most important factors that have fueled the turmoil in Iran's economic situation.
