On the eve of the New York trip; opposition demonstrations and former political prisoners' complaints against Raisi

On the eve of Ebrahim Raisi's official visit to New York, a number of opponents and former "hostages" of the Islamic Republic announced a lawsuit against him in a court in New York City.

The Iranian president is scheduled to travel to New York, United States, next week to address the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

As the National Union for Democracy in Iran (NUFDI) announced on its Twitter account, the lawsuit is scheduled to be filed in federal court in New York this week.

The content of these individuals' complaint against Ebrahim Raisi is "torture, intentional acts of psychological pressure, assault, beating, and imprisonment based on false accusations."

The plaintiffs in this case are Mehdi Hajati, a former member of the Shiraz City Council, Kylie Moore-Gilbert, an Australian researcher and former prisoner in Iran, and Hamid Babaei, a former prisoner currently in Belgium.

The plaintiffs are also represented by human rights lawyer Shahin Milani.

The plaintiffs in this case and their lawyer are scheduled to hold a news conference on this matter on Tuesday, September 20th, at 9 a.m. local time.

Shahin Milani, Kylie Moore Gilbert, Ahmad Batebi, and Navid Mohebbi will be among the speakers at this news conference.

On Thursday, September 14, a number of opponents of the Islamic Republic gathered in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York.

They called for the trial of President Ebrahim Raisi and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei for the killing of political prisoners in the 1960s, the November 2019 protests, and the execution of "600 people" during Mr. Raisi's presidency.

In recent days, dozens of Democratic and Republican members of the US Congress have also written to Joe Biden demanding that a visa not be issued to Raisi.

Previously, a number of Republican senators had made a similar request to Biden.

Nikki Haley, former US ambassador to the United Nations, also said that if Ebrahim Raisi can go to New York, it will be as if the UN has given him a large podium.

According to him, Ebrahim Raisi's possible presence at the United Nations shows "how corrupt and fragile this institution is."
