The Director General of Welfare of East Azerbaijan Province announced the registration of 1,474 cases of child abuse in the first 9 months of this year in the province. According to the definition of the World Health Organization, any physical, emotional, sexual abuse, neglect or behavior accompanied by neglect or exploitation that results in actual or potential harm to the health, survival, development or dignity of the child in the field of relationships or responsibility, trust or power, is considered child abuse.

According to HRANA news agency, citing Rokna, Fargol Sahaf, Director General of Welfare of East Azerbaijan Province, announced that 1,474 cases of child abuse were registered in the province during the first 9 months of this year.

He said in this regard: "Child abuse is divided into four types, including emotional, physical, sexual, and neglect and inattention. The most common type of child abuse in East Azerbaijan is neglect and inattention. Neglect of the family from the basic needs of children such as food, clothing, education, and proper care is considered part of this type of child abuse."

Ms. Sahaf stated: "Leaving children with people who cannot control their mental and emotional balance paves the way for serious and irreparable child abuse. Some addicts or mentally ill people, when they see the right conditions for child abuse, can cause serious harm to the child."

Stating that child abuse occurs most often in broken and tense families, unemployed head of the family, lack of financial resources, and addicted parents, he said: "Father's lack of sense of responsibility and economic pressure, if they lead to remarriage without considering the moral and social characteristics of the couple, can expose children to risks from an unsuitable stepfather or stepmother."

According to the World Health Organization's definition, any physical, emotional, sexual abuse, neglect, or negligent or exploitative behavior that results in actual or potential harm to the child's health, survival, development, or dignity in the context of relationships or responsibilities, trust, or power is considered child abuse.
