World Health Organization: Omicron is spreading faster than all other coronavirus strains

The World Health Organization warned on Tuesday that a new mutant strain of coronavirus, called Omicron, is spreading at a speed not seen in previous strains.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization, said that 77 countries have now reported detections of Omicron. The reality is that Omicron is likely present in most countries, even if it has not yet been detected in any country.
The head of the World Health Organization emphasized: "Omicron is spreading at a speed we have never seen in any previous strain."
Tedros Adhanom said the World Health Organization is concerned that some countries are downplaying Omicron as a less serious strain.
He added that although Omicron is more contagious, it is not yet clear whether the strain causes milder or more severe illness than previous types of coronavirus.
The head of the World Health Organization has warned that the spread and number of cases of Omicron could once again overwhelm unprepared health systems.
South Africa was the first country to report an outbreak of the new coronavirus strain last month.
Since the outbreak of Omicron in South Africa, the number of daily cases in the country has increased to 20,000. Earlier last month, the number of daily coronavirus cases in the country was less than 1,000.
