Three days of fires in the forests and pastures of Damchinar Boyer-Ahmad

Some Iranian media outlets, citing local officials, reported that the forest and pasture fire in the Boyer Ahmad Damchenar region has been “contained” after three days and nights. Reports indicate that volunteers have once again gone to the area to help put out the fire.

Shahrokh Kenari, the governor of Boyer-Ahmad, told ISNA news agency late on the night of July 13 that the fire was "between 30 and 40 kilometers wide" and had started on July 12.

Mr. Kenari stated that the fire has been contained. However, he emphasized that previously, "the fire was contained in two stages and then flared up again."

Governor Boyer Ahmad says, "A number of district administration forces, village leaders, and natural resources personnel will be present in the area until tomorrow to quickly extinguish the fire if it breaks out."

These statements come despite the fact that a number of users on social media had warned hours after the fire started about its severity and that the public forces were facing a lack of resources.

Meanwhile, although Mr. Kenari stated that the fire's width was between 30 and 40 kilometers three days after it started, other users had previously said that the fire line was between three and four kilometers. As a result, it seems that the fire has expanded much more during this time.

Another user wrote on Monday afternoon, "A large fire has engulfed the Damchenar forest area in Boyer-Ahmad County since last night and is still ongoing. Unfortunately, all the natural resources forces of Boyer-Ahmad County are involved in another fire in the Sarvak area, and for this reason the fire in the Damchenar area has gotten out of control. No forces except five or six [people are on site]."

On July 13, the head of the Boyer Ahmad County Natural Resources Department asked for help from volunteers and public forces, saying, "Given the dense forest and pasture cover of the area, the hilly nature of the area, and the lack of livestock in the area, it is difficult to control the fire, and we expect help from the public."

At the same time, many domestic news agencies and media outlets are saying that a significant portion of the oak trees in this area of the Zagros have been destroyed in a fire.

Fires and wildfires have occurred in pastures and forests in all corners of Iran in recent weeks. While there is talk of a lack of facilities to combat these fires, the inefficiency of responsible authorities, human error or the fact that the fire was intentional, and the lack of professional forces on site to control the fire as quickly as possible.
