Transitional Management Council calls for UN intervention to prevent killing of protesters in Iran

The Transitional Management Council, a coalition of forces opposed to the Islamic Republic, wrote to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, calling for the organization's Security Council to intervene to prevent the continued killing of protesters in Iran.

The Transitional Council's letter, signed by Hassan Shariatmadari, Secretary General, and Kaveh Mousavi, Secretary of the Justice Group of this political organization, refers to the violent repression of protesters and calls for "the United Nations Security Council to immediately call on Iran to immediately stop using lethal force against civilian protesters."

The Transitional Council also demanded that the UN Security Council force the Islamic Republic to “immediately cease all acts that constitute crimes against humanity, including murder, massacres, and extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary trials, as well as enforced disappearances; and to refrain from violating the human rights of protesters, including the right to peaceful assembly and demonstration.”

The letter also states: “In addition, we call on the UN Security Council to refer the investigation of these crimes against humanity to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, based on Chapter VII of the UN Charter.”

The latest Amnesty International report says that at least 143 Iranian citizens were killed by the Islamic Republic's security forces during last week's protests. Many observers believe the death toll is much higher.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that hundreds have been injured and thousands have been arrested. The Islamic Republic authorities have not yet provided accurate statistics in this regard.

“Unfortunately, we have concluded that there are no domestic solutions left to prevent these atrocities and protect the civilian population in Iran,” the Transitional Management Council’s letter to the UN Secretary-General reads. “It is clear that the citizens of Iran urgently need international humanitarian support against a regime that has acted with impunity for decades against anyone with opposing political or religious beliefs.”

In their final letter to the UN Secretary-General, the signatories wrote: “In particular, we urge you to call for urgent international calls and demand that Iran immediately cease its use of lethal force against its own people and other international crimes and human rights violations, and that an urgent resolution be submitted to the UN Security Council before referring the case to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court for an investigation into alleged crimes against humanity.”
