Zia Nabavi, a political activist and student prisoner, was arrested again after the 2009 elections. It is still unclear on what charges he was arrested and by which agency. Zia Nabavi has spent more than 8 years in prison in recent years.
Zia Nabavi, a political activist and master's student in sociology at Allameh Tabatabaei University, was arrested again by security agents at his home in Tehran this morning, Tuesday, February 25, 2019.
The United Students Channel has published news of the arrest of this former political prisoner. The reason for Mr. Nabavi's arrest and where he is being held are still unknown.
The Telegram channel Ensaf News also reported that the arrest warrant for this political activist was issued by the Fourth Investigation Branch of the Holy Prosecution Office of Evin Prison, and wrote that it is not known by which security agency agents Mr. Nabavi was arrested.
Zia Nabavi is a student imprisoned after the controversial 2009 presidential election, who was released from prison in 2017 after 8 and a half years. His initial sentence after his arrest was 15 years in prison and 76 lashes. This sentence was changed to 10 years in exile by the appeals court. Mr. Nabavi served his sentence in Karun and Semnan prisons.
It is reported that this morning, when the agents re-arrested the political activist at his home, they also searched his property and took some belongings with them.
The reason for Mr. Nabavi's arrest is still unclear. About 10 days ago, Bahareh Hedayat, a political activist and student imprisoned after the 2009 elections, was arrested again by Tehran's security police and, after being transferred from the Vazra detention center to Qarchak prison in Varamin, was temporarily released on bail.
After the events of January 2017, which led to the arrest and detention of a number of students, Science Minister Mansour Gholami wrote a letter to President Hassan Rouhani asking for his help in tracking the situation of these students.
