Amnesty International calls for the immediate release of Nahid Taghavi and Mehran Rauf

Amnesty International issued a statement calling the trial process in the cases of Nahid Taghavi and Mehran Raouf in Iran "grossly unfair" and calling for their immediate and unconditional release.
In its statement, a copy of which was obtained by Radio Farda, Amnesty International wrote that Nahid Taghavi suffers from chronic back pain and that authorities are refusing to allow her to undergo surgery on her spine, which, according to specialist doctors, is urgently needed.
Amnesty International emphasizes that these two individuals “are both prisoners of conscience who have been arbitrarily detained in Tehran’s Evin Prison since October 16, 2020 solely for their peaceful exercise of their human rights and should be released immediately and unconditionally.”
Nahid Taghavi, who previously lived in Cologne, Germany, was arrested on October 15 without specific charges at her home in Tehran and transferred to Evin Prison.
This 66-year-old Iranian-German citizen has been sentenced to ten years in prison on charges of "participating in the management of an illegal group" and eight months on charges of "propaganda activity against the regime."
According to Mostafa Nili, Nahid Taghavi's lawyer, this same sentence was also issued to Mehran Raouf, a dual Iranian-British labor activist.
On August 6, Britain strongly criticized the long-term prison sentence handed down to Mehran Rauf.
