Widespread corruption in granting scholarships; List of 98 Aghazadehs with "illegal" scholarships sent to the Judiciary

After new details emerged about the illegal scholarship case, this time a member of parliament announced that a list of 98 "gentlemen" who had used scholarships for rent had been sent to the judiciary.

Mahmoud Sadeghi told the Khaneh Mellat news agency on Wednesday, November 2, that the list of 98 people includes "some officials at various levels" that have been provided to the judiciary.

On Tuesday, October 6, three years after the case of illegal scholarships and the allocation of scholarships to study abroad without going through legal procedures was raised, the MP said that the names of a number of MPs and their children, MPs, a Friday prayer leader, a police commander, and a minister are on this list.

However, Mahmoud Sadeghi did not mention the names of these Islamic Republic officials who used bribes to obtain scholarships.

The illegal scholarship case was raised after the Hassan Rouhani government came to power in 2013, and involved granting illegal scholarships to more than 3,000 people during the Mahmoud Ahmadinejad government. Conservatives and figures close to the Islamic Republic's leader denied the accusation, but the Ministry of Science finally confirmed after investigations that more than 800 people did not meet the requirements for scholarships.

The widespread mismanagement and corruption in various elements and components of Iran’s governance structure have repeatedly been the target of severe criticism by US government officials and legislators. The United States has repeatedly condemned the institutionalized corruption and mismanagement, special spending and exclusive privileges for individuals close to power, violation of citizens’ rights, suppression of the people’s legitimate demands, plunder of Iran’s God-given assets, and ambitious regional and global warmongering of the leaders of the ruling regime in Iran, and has considered them to be among the main causes of the social, livelihood, welfare, economic, and financial problems of the Iranian people.
