The tragic murder of "Ilya" is a wake-up call for child safety in a city where officials are asleep.

The gruesome and horrific murder of "Ilya" raised the alarm about child safety in a city where officials seem to be asleep.

Iran has once again witnessed a crime that has exposed the bitter reality of children’s defenselessness in the face of dangerous criminals. In the large city of Rasht, 9-year-old Ilya Zadhossein (some reports say he was 10) left home to play on Friday evening and never returned alive. His body was found on the outskirts of Shaft city after a two-day search. Ilya was the victim of deception and violence by a man with a history of child abuse.

The perpetrator of this crime is a 38-year-old satellite installer and electrician who had visited Ilya's family home on the day of the incident. Taking advantage of a short-term acquaintance, he took the child who was playing in front of their house into his car, raped Ilya, strangled her in a horrific act, and left her body in a secluded area at night. His confessions were motivated by "evil temptations" and fear of being exposed.

What makes this case even more shocking is not just the brutal violence, but the big question of why someone with a history of similar crimes is free. How is it possible for someone with a history of child abuse to move freely in the same social environment without restrictions and even enter people's homes? This disregard for dangerous records threatens not only the safety of a neighborhood, but the lives of children in an entire city.

Rasht, a city where families must worry about their children playing, has these days become a symbol of a vacuum of supervision, the absence of an effective prevention system, and the weakness in dealing decisively with dangerous criminals. Ilya's murder showed that security in many Iranian cities, especially for children, is more of an administrative illusion than a tangible reality.

This tragedy is a clear warning that unless authorities establish a serious and permanent mechanism to monitor and limit criminals with a history of crime, rather than ad hoc responses, there is a possibility that such incidents will recur in every city and every neighborhood.
