Mahsa Amini, finalist for the top human rights award

Mahsa (Gina) Amini was a finalist for the European Union's top human rights award.
Last Thursday, the European Parliament announced Mahsa Amini and the "Women, Life, Freedom" movement as one of the three finalists for the Sakharov Prize.
The annual Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has been awarded since 1988 to individuals and organizations that defend human rights and fundamental freedoms. The prize is named after the Soviet physicist and political dissident Andrei Sakharov and is worth 50,000 euros.
"The selection of Mahsa and the Women, Life, Freedom movement as one of the three main candidates for the Sakharov Prize is in recognition of their courageous fight for women's rights," said McAllister, the European Parliament's foreign policy chief, according to the Associated Press.
The top human rights award is given annually to individuals or groups who work to combat tyranny and defend freedom of expression, and the nominees for the award are selected by political groups and over 40 members of the European Parliament. This year, the European People's Party nominated Mahsa Amini and the Women of Iran for the award.
