New wave of executions in Qezel Hesar Prison, Karaj

The head of Qezl-e Hassar Prison announced the start of executions this year.

According to the Iranian Center for Human Rights, today, Thursday, April 20, the head of Qezl-e-Hesar Prison announced to the prisoners that the execution of death sentences in this prison will begin on May 25.

Qezl-e-Hesar prison is one of the most crowded prisons in Iran and has a high number of prisoners sentenced to death. The prisoners sentenced to death in this prison are accused of drug trafficking and murder. The death sentences were issued to them while in the past few days, the main suspect in the Ukrainian plane crash that killed more than 179 people was sentenced to only 13 years in prison.

This news has not only caused stress and anxiety for prisoners sentenced to death, but also for their families. Last year, more than 700 prisoners were executed. As in the past, families of prisoners held protest rallies in response to this news, chanting "Don't execute."

In the past few months, we have also witnessed the execution of loved ones protesting in Iran who were accused of war and corruption and sentenced to death for demanding justice and protesting. Executions that reached the ears of the entire world.

The question is, what is the Islamic Republic's intention with this new wave of executions? Is it to distract public attention from the popular revolution and delay the fall of the regime?
