Massive oil spill and fire in Maroun-Isfahan oil pipeline

The Maroun-Isfahan pipeline has caught fire following a rupture, and images posted on social media indicate a massive oil leak into the Sarkhun River.

The Iranian Oil Pipelines and Telecommunications Company reported on Sunday, December 13, that the 30-inch Maroon to Isfahan crude oil pipeline had an accident at kilometer 229 in the city of Sarkhun, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province.

ISNA news agency also reported, citing the prefect of Miankouh in Ardel County, Chaharmahal-e-Bakhtiari, that at 11:00 am on Sunday, an oil pipeline located in the Miankouh area of Ardel County suffered a rupture and caught fire.

Imamdad Shahbazi has said that this pipeline is currently burning.

According to him, no one was killed in the incident, but "oil spills into the soil and rainfall will definitely cause oil pollution in the Sarkhun River in the coming days."

The pipeline transports oil produced in the Maroon region to the Isfahan refinery, which refines 375,000 barrels of oil per day.

Photos and videos published in the media indicate a massive fire in the pipeline and a large volume of oil leaking into the Sarkhun River.

The head of the Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province's Crisis Management Department also said: "There is a 90 percent chance that the wear and tear of the transmission pipeline is the cause of the accident."
