Emergency Security Council meeting on ceasefire in Syria

The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on March 7 to expedite the implementation of the ceasefire resolution in Syria's Eastern Ghouta. The ceasefire resolution was adopted on February 24.

According to French officials, the United Nations Security Council will hold an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday, March 7th (March 16th) to implement the Syria ceasefire resolution as quickly as possible.

The aim of the meeting, which is being held at the request of France and Britain, is to "implement without delay" the ceasefire resolution in Eastern Ghouta, which was adopted on February 24.

The ceasefire in Eastern Ghouta, located on the outskirts of Damascus, was supposed to last at least 30 days. The aim of the ceasefire was to allow the rapid delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged population of Eastern Ghouta and the evacuation of the sick and wounded from the area.

Last Wednesday, February 28, Russia and Syria held the US and its allies responsible for the breakdown of the ceasefire in Syria. However, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, referring to the killing of civilians in Eastern Ghouta, held the Assad regime responsible and called for the prosecution of the perpetrators of this "war crime" by the International Criminal Court.

The first humanitarian aid convoy in weeks was able to enter Eastern Ghouta on Monday, March 5. But the International Committee of the Red Cross says it has been forced to halt aid deliveries after the security situation worsened.

Eastern Ghouta is one of the largest areas of Syria still under the control of opposition forces. About 400,000 people in the area are besieged by Syrian government forces and are the target of bombing by the Syrian army, backed by Russia.

Hundreds of people have been killed in the bombing of the area in recent weeks. Russia, which has imposed a five-hour daily ceasefire in the area since February 27, has accused the Syrian government opposition of shelling a “safe passage” intended for the evacuation of civilians. The opposition denies this.
