UN poll: Two-thirds of world considers climate emergency

According to a global poll conducted by the United Nations, nearly two-thirds of people say humanity is facing a climate emergency.

According to AFP, the survey, the largest of its kind, was conducted by sending questionnaires to 1.2 million people in 50 countries.

Researchers from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Oxford University, who conducted the survey, reported on Wednesday that respondents, young and old, rich and poor, male and female, in 50 countries, representing more than half the world's population, also listed a range of policy options for solving the problem.

"Concern about the climate emergency is much more widespread than we thought," Steven Fisher, a sociologist at the University of Oxford who helped design the survey and process the data, told AFP.

According to the news agency, these findings indicate that the global climate movement, which began in 2019 under the leadership of Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg, continues to grow despite being hidden from public view due to the coronavirus crisis.
