MP: Many children in earthquake-hit areas of Sarab are seriously ill

Yousef Davoudi, a representative from Sarab in the Islamic Consultative Assembly, reported that many children in the earthquake-hit areas of Sarab had "colds," saying that their bodies were "completely frostbitten."

According to ISNA news agency on Saturday (November 9), Davoudi made this statement at a crisis management meeting of the East Azerbaijan Governorate, adding that "given the weather conditions in the earthquake-hit areas of Sarab County, people are seriously ill and we need at least seven to eight general practitioner teams to attend to the patients."

Referring to the significantly low temperature in Sarab, he criticized the lack of electric heaters for the temporary shelter tents for earthquake victims, saying that on Saturday, "we almost lost five people due to carbon monoxide poisoning from heating equipment in the tents."

Davoudi also reported the deaths of two people due to carbon monoxide inhalation in tents and described "the need for hot food, providing healthy heat that does not harm people, and the increase in diseases such as colds" as the main problems facing people in earthquake-hit areas.

ISNA news agency also reported on Sunday (November 10) that Farzad Rahmani, head of the pre-hospital emergency department at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, had saved the life of a 15-day-old baby whose parents died the previous day from carbon monoxide poisoning.

According to Mr. Rahmani, "the invisible killer, the opponent of the 15-day-old baby, was not affected by the earthquake" and he is currently in "good physical condition."

As this official stated, so far, "23 earthquake victims in the province have suffered gas poisoning due to failure to comply with safety precautions."

According to this report, so far 720 people have been injured in the 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Miyaneh, with the majority of injuries resulting from fleeing from earthquake-hit homes and stress; of these, 450 were from Sarab County and the rest from Miyaneh.

The earthquake, which struck the city of Turk in the Middle County of East Azerbaijan Province at 2:17 a.m. on Friday (November 6), has killed five people so far.

According to the governor of East Azerbaijan, the earthquake caused 10 to 100 percent damage to more than 2,300 residential units and caused the death of more than 1,500 livestock.

Another report indicates that Ali Larijani, the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, asked the relevant ministries to examine the needs of the earthquake victims and "build shelters for them as soon as possible."

Referring to the notification of the mission to the Civil Engineering Commission to dispatch a delegation to the earthquake-stricken areas of Mianeh and Sarab, considering the cold weather in the aforementioned areas, Larijani added: "It is necessary for the Housing Foundation and the Red Crescent to make serious efforts. The Ministry of Interior should also do its work carefully."
