Amnesty International warns about the physical condition of an 82-year-old dual national prisoner in Iran

Amnesty International has warned of the health conditions of Shokrollah Jabali, an 82-year-old dual Iranian-Australian citizen imprisoned in Iran, saying Iranian authorities have prevented him from accessing specialized medical services.

The organization's announcement says that Mr. Jabali's health condition has been deteriorating since February 1, 2019, when he was imprisoned in Tehran's Evin Prison. In addition to a history of stroke, he suffers from kidney stones, high blood pressure, sciatica in his legs, and a hernia problem, and needs surgery.

According to Amnesty International, although Mr. Jebeli was transferred to a hospital outside the prison last year following a stroke, the authorities returned him to prison the same day, against the advice of doctors, and have prevented him from receiving treatment for the time being.

The statement added that Mr. Jebali's fellow inmates found him listless and unresponsive on March 8, but the authorities have still not allowed him to receive specialized treatment. This is despite the fact that the head of Evin Prison and the head of the prison clinic wrote to the prosecutor's office last year that his continued imprisonment posed a risk to his life.

Amnesty International says that Iranian authorities have demanded 7 billion tomans for his release for treatment, which he cannot afford.

According to the announcement, Shukrallah Jabali is facing two economic-related criminal cases, one of which he was sentenced to four years and six months in prison, while the second case is still pending. According to Amnesty International, Mr. Jabali was not allowed to choose his own lawyer in the first case, and in the second case, the judge has requested a change of his chosen lawyer.

Amnesty International has finally called for his immediate release and access to appropriate treatment.
