Tehran's air remains unhealthy; sports activities banned and schools closed in person

Continued severe air pollution in Tehran has led to schools being closed in person for the next three days and all individual and group sports activities in Tehran being banned.

These decisions were made after the Meteorological Organization announced that the air quality in Tehran province remains unhealthy for all groups, and this situation will continue at least until Thursday of this week.

The average concentration of air pollutants in Tehran on Wednesday, December 10, is 148, the status of 21 air quality monitoring stations is red, and the air quality has crossed the 150 mark.

The Deputy Governor of Tehran announced that due to the intensification of air pollution on Wednesday, it was approved that all educational centers will be closed for two days, Wednesday and Thursday, individual and group sports activities will be prohibited, and leave for working mothers with children will also be approved.

According to Abed Maleki, the temporary closure of industrial units, factories, and centers that contribute to air pollution, the ban on the use of liquid fuel in power plants and industries adjacent to metropolitan areas, and the introduction of non-attendance university classes are other measures approved to control air pollution in Tehran.

The latest report by the International City Quality Assessment and Rankings Database announced on December 29 that Tehran, with an air quality index of 157, ranks fourth among the 10 most polluted cities in the world.

The intensification of air pollution in recent years, especially during the cold months of the year, has become one of Iran's environmental challenges.

The head of the Air Pollution Research Center at the University of Tehran announced in May this year that 40,000 people in Iran die prematurely every year due to air pollution.

Many experts and even officials had stated that the reason for the critical air pollution at that time was the use of diesel fuel in power plants.
