Afghan Policewoman: Taliban Gouged Out My Eyes with the Help of My Father

Afghan media has reported the painful fate of a female police officer named “Khatre” who served in Ghazni province. She said that four months ago, the Taliban, with the help of her father, first wounded her and then gouged out her eyes with a knife.

The story of Khatira, a 30-year-old police officer from Ghazni, gained media attention when she met with the acting interior minister in Kabul. The policewoman had come to Kabul for eye treatment and complained that the government had ignored her.

Khatira, a mother of five, says that when she wanted to start working as a police officer, she faced strong opposition from her father. Her father threatened to kill her with his own hands if she worked in the police department.

Khatira, however, ignored her father's words and joined the ranks of the Afghan female police officers despite his strong opposition. Khatira says her father informed the Taliban, and the militants of this group first shot and wounded her and then gouged out her eyes with a knife.

Massoud Andarabi, the acting interior minister of Afghanistan, recently met with the now blind and injured policewoman. He called her brave on his Twitter page and ordered that she be given an apartment. Andarabi also promised to help treat Khatira's eyes.

But Khatira said that she was only paid 80,000 Afghanis and did not receive any other assistance.

Khatre explains that she cannot walk due to the severity of her wounds and longs to see her children, but she cannot see them.

Khatre says she has no other wish than to have her eyes treated.

Local officials in Ghazni province have said they have arrested Khatira's father. The Taliban group has not yet commented on this brutal act.

According to official statistics, more than 3,500 women are working as police officers in Afghanistan. Many of these women have faced numerous social and family problems in addition to threats from the Taliban.
