Coronavirus in Iran; The number of deaths in Tehran is nearly two-thirds of the total victims

The Ministry of Health announced the official number of coronavirus victims in Iran over the past 24 hours at 211, and two members of the Tehran City Council, stating that 136 of this number were related to Tehran's statistics, called for a two-week lockdown of the capital instead of one week.

According to statistics from the Iranian Ministry of Health, with the death of 211 more patients infected with the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the official number of victims of this virus in Iran has reached 26,957, an increase compared to previous days.

Sima Lari, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, announced in her daily report on Sunday, October 4, that 3,653 new patients with COVID-19 had been identified, and said that 4,154 patients in severe condition are currently under intensive care.

According to this official report, the total number of coronavirus patients in Iran has reached nearly 472,000.

The accuracy of the daily and official statistics announced by the Ministry of Health has always been seriously questioned by some independent experts, and some sources say that the number of infections and victims in Iran is between two and several times the official figures.

Tehran situation

However, based on these same official reports, two members of the Tehran City Council announced today that the number of coronavirus victims in Tehran over the past 24 hours was 136 and called for a closure of the capital for at least two weeks instead of a one-week holiday.

Nahid Khodakarami, head of the Tehran City Council Health Committee, referring to the announcement of a one-week restriction issued yesterday by the Tehran Governor's Office, said, "The answer to whether the pandemic can be controlled with a one-week closure is no."

According to an announcement by the Tehran Governor's Office, the activities of some centers in Tehran Province have been banned from Saturday until October 8.

Accordingly, educational centers, mosques, cinemas, theaters, museums and museum gardens, reception halls, women's hairdressing salons and beauty salons, holding social and cultural events and conferences, high-traffic sports clubs, cafes, coffee houses and tea houses, zoos and amusement parks, water recreation centers and indoor pools, and gyms and Friday prayers have been declared closed or prohibited.

However, Ms. Khodakarami did not consider simply announcing restrictions sufficient, saying: "If we cannot control these restrictions properly, we will witness the peak of the disease again later."

He also added that if officials cannot do better, they will continue to follow "the same herd epidemic."

Nahid Khodakarami and Mohammad Javad Haghshenas, another member of the Tehran City Council, called for a two-week lockdown of Tehran instead of one week, emphasizing that "if travel is not restricted, we will again see the virus moving towards clean areas of the country."

According to the Ministry of Health, the current status of the provinces of Tehran, Isfahan, Qom, East Azerbaijan, South Khorasan, Semnan, Qazvin, Lorestan, Ardabil, Khuzestan, Kermanshah, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad, Gilan, Bushehr, Zanjan, Ilam, Khorasan Razavi, Mazandaran, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Alborz, West Azerbaijan, Markazi, Kerman, North Khorasan, Hamedan, and Yazd is still red.
