Child marriage: 131,000 children under 15 married in Iran in the past 5 years

According to data from the Statistical Center of Iran, over the past 5 years, 131,000 children under the age of 15 have been married in the country. Also, over the past year, 791 children were born to mothers aged 10 to 14. The physical and psychological harms resulting from child marriage inflict irreparable damage on the lives of these children. These harms include pregnancies under the age of 18, maternal mortality, depression, suicide attempts, divorce, failure to complete education, and the perpetuation of the cycle of cultural and economic poverty.

According to HRANA news agency, quoting Tejarat News, over the past 5 years, 131,000 children under the age of 15 have been married in Iran.

According to data from the Statistical Center of Iran, 33,371 girls under the age of 15 were married in 2017. Also, 30,532, 28,412, 31,518, and 7,529 girls under the age of 15 were married in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, respectively.

According to the same statistics, over the past 5 years, 42 boys under the age of 15 got married in 2017. Also, 29, 23, 21, and eight boys under the age of 15 got married in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, respectively.

In addition, during 1400, 791 children were born to mothers aged 10 to 14. Sistan and Baluchestan province is at the top of this statistic with 248 children born to mothers aged 10 to 14 during 1400.

After this province, Khuzestan with 92 children born, Khorasan Razavi with 65 children born, Golestan with 46 children born, Kerman with 45 children born, and East Azerbaijan with 35 children born are at the top of the list of children born to mothers aged 10 to 14.
