A member of parliament announced the payment of 27 billion tomans in damages to the British Embassy.

Ahmad Mazeni, a member of the Iranian parliament, has said that "27 billion tomans were paid from the nation's pockets to compensate for the damages caused by the students' attack on the British Embassy in Tehran."

According to ILNA news agency, in a public session of the parliament on May 11, this MP asked the Iranian Foreign Ministry to clarify this matter.

He said the sum, equivalent to 1.3 million pounds, was paid to restore several works of art that were destroyed during the attack on the British embassy.

During the attack on the British Embassy in 2011, attackers roamed the embassy building for hours. They tore down British flags and pictures of Queen Elizabeth, and damaged offices and equipment in the building.

The issue of paying compensation to the British Embassy had been raised since 2014, following the agreement between Iran and Britain to reopen their embassies, but until now, no details of the amount of compensation paid had been announced.
