345 University of Tehran students: Kasra Nouri's expulsion was an exclusionary and police measure

345 students at the University of Tehran have signed and published a letter calling the expulsion of imprisoned Darvish Kasra Nouri from the university "absolutely illegal" and "an eliminatory and police measure."

The letter, addressed to Farhad Nili, the president of the University of Tehran, emphasizes the request to cancel Mr. Nouri's expulsion order and states that "Kasri Nouri has been detained since March 1, 2017 and is practically unable to return to the university."

The students who signed this letter, referring to the provisions of the student disciplinary code, told the president of the University of Tehran that in a case similar to Mr. Nouri's situation, the university should "assist in the student's continued education," but instead proceeded to expel him.

Kasra Nouri, a Gonabadi dervish and one of the administrators of the "Majzooban Noor" website, was arrested on March 1, 2017, along with hundreds of other dervishes, during the Golestan Haft incident. After some time, he was sentenced by the Tehran Revolutionary Court to 12 years in prison, 74 lashes, and two years of deprivation of social activities and exile to the "Talaat Babajani" county in Kermanshah province.

Mr. Nouri, who has been in prison without leave since the beginning of his arrest, has not been able to go to university during this time, and this situation has led to Tehran University officials taking action to expel him.

The news of Mr. Nouri's expulsion was announced last week by the prisoner's brother, Pouya Nouri, on Twitter, writing that the University of Tehran had issued a letter of expulsion for the prisoner in November of last year.

After this news was widely shared on social media, Mohammad Ali Zare, the vice president of cultural and social affairs at the University of Tehran, confirmed that Kasra Nouri had been expelled for not registering, and said that Kasra Nouri must provide evidence of his imprisonment.

According to these University of Tehran officials, if Kasra Nouri provides the university with documents that show the reason for his failure to register, "his registration can be carried out."

The vice president of the University of Tehran has not explained why, if such a procedure is possible, Tehran University officials did not take steps to contact the imprisoned student and request such documents before expelling him.
