60 Percent of Germans Support Restrictions on Refugee Admissions

According to the latest poll, sixty percent of Germans support setting a cap on refugee admissions to the country. Germany’s Chancellor has repeatedly opposed implementing such restrictions on refugees.

The German magazine “Focus” published the results of a poll on Friday, September 16 (September 26 in the Persian calendar), according to which 60 percent of Germans agree with setting a fixed quota for accepting refugees. 35 percent of respondents opposed this measure.

In this poll, 81 percent of supporters of the right-wing populist party “Alternative for Germany” approve of implementing this restriction. The party actively promotes this viewpoint.

The number of supporters of this idea is also high among supporters of Angela Merkel’s party, the Chancellor of Germany. 64 percent of Christian Democratic Union members support setting a cap.

Meanwhile, the majority of supporters of the Free Democratic Party (57 percent), the Left Party (54 percent), and the Social Democratic Party (52 percent) support the idea of limiting the number of refugees.

Only the majority of members of the German Green Party are opposed to setting a cap on refugee admissions. This poll was conducted last week by surveying 1,002 people across Germany.

Last year, over one million people sought asylum after entering Germany. This has led to “Angela Merkel’s open door policy” toward refugees facing considerable criticism. Terrorist attacks in several German cities have further intensified the criticism.

The Christian Social Union, the CDU’s partner in Bavaria, is also a serious critic of Angela Merkel’s immigration policy. Horst Seehofer, Prime Minister of Bavaria and leader of the Christian Social Union, says Germany should only agree to accept 200,000 refugees per year.

Nevertheless, the German Chancellor has repeatedly rejected implementing any restrictions on the number of refugees accepted. A stance that could weaken her political position within her own party as well as among public opinion.
