European Parliament Doors Closed to the Islamic Republic

The head of the European Parliament issued a clear message against repression by the Islamic Republic, announcing a ban on entry of Iranian diplomats to the European Parliament.

“Roberta Metsola,” president of the European Parliament, announced a decision that can be interpreted as one of the most explicit stances by the European Union’s legislative body against the Islamic Republic. She announced on social media platform X that entry of all diplomatic staff and any representatives of the Islamic Republic to all European Parliament buildings has been banned.

The European Parliament president explained this decision in writing: “This institution will not help legitimize a government that has maintained its survival through torture, repression, and killing.”

This action, beyond being an administrative decision, carries a political and symbolic message; a message that demonstrates the European Parliament does not intend to continue normal diplomatic relations with a government that, in its view, systematically violates human rights. The ban on entry of diplomatic staff from the Islamic Republic effectively blocks the formal channels of direct interaction between this government and the European Parliament and increases the level of political pressure.

Metsola’s decision comes in a context where in recent years, European criticism of the human rights situation in Iran has intensified, particularly following the suppression of domestic protests, widespread arrests, and execution of death sentences. The European Parliament had previously called for accountability from Islamic Republic officials for violations of citizens’ rights by issuing multiple resolutions.

From a diplomatic perspective, this action may signal a greater distancing of European institutions from the “critical dialogue” approach with Tehran; an approach that has now been replaced by a policy of pressure and delegitimization. Simultaneously, this decision sends a clear message to human rights activists and Iranian protesters that their voice is heard at the highest levels of European politics.

In summary, the ban on entry of representatives of the Islamic Republic to the European Parliament buildings can be viewed not only as a symbolic action, but as part of a process aimed at increasing the political costs of repression and human rights violations for Iran’s ruling power in the international arena.
