Attacks by Extremist Islamists Against Religious Minorities in Syria and Destruction of Religious Sites

Extremist Islamists in Syria have attacked religious minorities and destroyed their places of worship.

Local sources reported Thursday evening, August 14, that groups affiliated with “Abu Muhammad al-Jolani” have targeted more than 20 shrines and religious sites belonging to Syrian minorities, including Christians and other religious communities, over the past several months. These attacks have been carried out using explosives, sound grenades, and arson, resulting in severe consequences for vulnerable populations.

Human rights activists have emphasized that these documented actions are concerning. Extremist ideologies propagated in mosques controlled by these groups not only threaten the psychological security of society but have also caused fear and terror among minorities. Damascus, which has always been a symbol of religious diversity and coexistence, is now witnessing increased psychological pressure on Christian communities and other minorities.

Recent attacks are only part of a broader worrying pattern that includes bloody clashes in “al-Suwayda” with a predominantly Druze population and massacres of Alawites in Latakia Province. These actions demonstrate the intensification of violence against religious minorities and a direct threat to Syria’s historical coexistence.

Experts warn that the continuation of this extremism not only endangers the security of minority populations but also weakens the social and cultural foundations of Syria.
