“Pedram Madani” Accused of Spying for Israel Executed

The Judicial Power news agency announced the execution of “Pedram Madani” accused of spying for Israel.

The Judicial Power news agency reported this morning, Wednesday, June 7, the execution of Pedram Madani who had been arrested in 2020 on charges of spying for Israel. According to statements by the Islamic Republic, Pedram had attempted to pass classified information including locations and buildings housing infrastructure equipment to a Mossad officer.

Pedram Madani’s arrest and his lack of access to a lawyer came while his mother, Narges Mohammadi, and some human rights activists had warned about his case that it contained many contradictions and flaws, and that without access to a lawyer of his choice and under pressure he was forced to confess, ultimately resulting in a death sentence being issued against him.

Although human rights activists had warned about the contradictions in his case, the Islamic Republic claimed that Pedram had repeatedly traveled to Germany and once met with a Mossad officer at the Israeli embassy in Brussels. The Mezan news agency also claimed in a report that Pedram had previously traveled to Israel and received espionage operation orders from there.

According to reports by Iran Human Rights Organization, Pedram was transferred from Evin Prison to Qarchak Prison in Karaj on Sunday, June 4, and his family was summoned to the prison for a final visit. Iran Human Rights Organization also announced that although Pedram’s death sentence had been overturned three times by the Supreme Court, the parallel branch each time ruled again for his execution.

Human rights activists including Narges Mohammadi, repeatedly by posting messages on social media, had called for a halt to the execution of Pedram’s death sentence.

The Islamic Republic, besides Pedram, has arrested other individuals on similar charges and issued death sentences for them and even carried out their sentences. An issue that has faced significant skepticism and warnings from numerous human rights activists and civil society organizations.
