British Government Refuses to Grant Citizenship to Asylum Seekers

According to a new regulation by the British Home Office, the country will refuse to grant citizenship to asylum seekers.
According to published reports, the British Home Office has established regulations stipulating that citizenship applications from individuals who enter the country illegally and through dangerous routes will be rejected, regardless of how long they have resided in the country, and they will not be granted nationality.
Following the publication of this report, Stella Creasy, a Labour Party member of parliament, announced: “These changes mean that refugees will always remain second-class citizens. This policy must change immediately. If we have granted someone refugee status, it is not right to later deny them the path to citizenship.”
This law was communicated to the staff of the visa and immigration section of the British Home Office on Monday, February 10, 2025, and states: “All individuals who previously entered Britain illegally and submit citizenship applications from February 10, 2025 onwards will naturally be rejected, and this law applies regardless of how much time has passed since their illegal entry.”
The Refugee Council in Britain also responded to this government decision by stating: “This action could deprive 71,000 people who previously successfully registered asylum applications from obtaining British citizenship.” A prominent immigration lawyer also deemed this decision a violation of international law.
A number of Labour Party representatives along with several charitable organizations have called for the immediate cancellation of this directive. Furthermore, the British Refugee Council and some representatives and members of the Labour Party have also condemned this government decision.
It remains unclear whether the British government will reconsider and revoke the new law, but the government believes that by adopting this decision, it can help retain its voter base in the Labour Party who may be tempted to join Mr. Farage’s party.
