Legal Limbo and Continued Detention of Atena Farzad

“Atena Farzad” remains detained in Evin Prison for over 50 days and continues to be in a state of legal limbo.

“Atena Farzad,” a cartoonist and civil activist, was arrested with violence by security forces on the evening of Farvardin 5 of the current year while attempting to display one of her paintings on a wall in Pastoor Street, Tehran as a protest action, and was transferred to Evin Prison.

She has a previous record of detention and conviction for her activities. In June 2023, after referring to Evin prosecutor’s office, she was arrested and transferred to Qarchak Prison in Varamin, and after several days, Branch One of Evin prosecutor’s office charged her with “disturbing public order,” and she was finally released on bail.

She is currently detained in Evin Prison and, despite over 50 days having passed, remains in legal limbo. From late Ordibehesht, due to protesting the condition of one of her cellmates, she was banned from visitation by order of the prison disciplinary committee, a deprivation she still faces.

Atena Farzad, who is detained on charges of “insulting sacred values,” “propaganda against the state,” and “disturbing public order,” has not yet had a court hearing to address her charges and remains in legal limbo.
