Pope Francis’s Ruling on Same-Sex Couple Marriages

The Vatican announced a ruling issued by Pope Francis, leader of Catholics worldwide, regarding the marriage of same-sex couples.

Pope Francis, leader of Catholics worldwide, approved a historic ruling that clarifies participation in same-sex marriage ceremonies. The Vatican announced regarding the aforementioned ruling: “Based on the ruling approved by Pope Francis, Catholic priests can participate in blessing same-sex couples, provided that it is not part of the church’s religious ceremony. The ruling states that blessing such ceremonies does not mean legitimizing such situations, but rather describes it as ‘God’s welcome to everyone.'”

Over the past three years, Pope Francis has also supported the cohabitation of same-sex individuals, stating that in his opinion, same-sex individuals should be allowed to live together. He had used the term “personal union” in this regard, which encompasses almost all marriage rights but formally did not give it the title of “marriage.”

He has now made a major and radical change in Catholic churches by issuing a document regarding same-sex marriages and their blessing by priests, to the extent that the release of this document has triggered many reactions.

In the aforementioned document released yesterday, Monday, December 18, Pope Francis proposed to cardinals that in order to prevent same-sex couple ceremonies from being confused with sacred marriage ceremonies, they can be held and blessings of a good life can be offered to the couples.

The document also emphasizes that marriage is a sacred, lifelong ceremony between a man and a woman. Pope Francis’s reasoning regarding the word “blessing” is that the aforementioned term has a very broad definition in the scriptures, and people seeking an elevated relationship with God and His love and mercy should not face preconditions to receive it.

In the Vatican’s view, marriage is an indissoluble bond between a man and a woman, and it has always opposed same-sex marriage. However, on the other hand, the document states that prayer will be offered for those who do not claim religious legitimacy for their marital status but desire their relationships to be enriched and the Holy Spirit to be present in them, and ultimately priests’ prayers for this group of people are performed to increase their trust in God.

The approval of the aforementioned ruling by Pope Francis comes at a time when many Catholics consider homosexuality and sexual relations outside of marriage to be sinful, and believe that under these circumstances, one cannot even seek God’s mercy and blessing for them.

The approval of this new document has also angered many traditionalists. Following the release of this document, Luigi Casalini, a Catholic and conservative blogger, reacted sharply and criticized Pope Francis’s decision, writing: “This document is a form of heresy and will cause the collapse of the church.”

In another section of the aforementioned document, reference is made to the deterioration of a person’s relationship with God as a result of sin, stating: “Even when a person’s relationship with God has been darkened by sin, the church can always bless them and extend its hand to them. Offering such grace does not legitimize something, but at the same time the church should not judge.”

On the other hand, some priests also defended the document and expressed satisfaction. Father James Martin, a prominent American priest, is one of the priests who supported this proposal and wrote on the platform X: “This document recognizes the deep desire of many Catholic same-sex couples for God’s blessing in their romantic relationships. Now, along with many priests, I will be happy to ask God for blessings for the shared lives of my same-sex friends.”
