Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to Narges Mohammadi, Civil Rights Activist

The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Narges Mohammadi, a civil rights activist, human rights defender, and prisoner in Iran.

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five Nobel Prizes established by Alfred Nobel and first awarded in 1901. In his will, Nobel stated that this prize should be given to a person who has made the greatest or most extensive contribution to the brotherhood of nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies, or the promotion of peace conferences. The prize is awarded annually in Oslo, the capital of Norway.

Narges Mohammadi, a women’s rights activist currently serving her sentence in Evin Prison, continues to work for human rights and democracy even from within the prison walls. The Nobel Peace Prize Selection Committee announced this morning, October 6, corresponding to October 14 on the Persian calendar, that Narges Mohammadi has been selected as the winner of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize at the committee’s headquarters in Oslo, the capital of Norway. The award was presented with the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom.”

Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee for Peace in Oslo, stated: “This prize is awarded to Narges Mohammadi for her struggle against the oppression of women in Iran, her fight for the advancement of human rights, and the achievement of freedom for all.”

It is worth noting that Shirin Ebadi, a human rights lawyer, former judge, writer, and educator, also received the Nobel Peace Prize 20 years earlier, making Narges Mohammadi the second Iranian woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
