11 Police Officers Killed in Armed Attack in Sistan and Baluchestan

The police force of Sistan and Baluchestan province announced the killing of 11 police officers and wounding of several others in an armed attack in Rask city.

An armed attack took place early Friday morning, December 24, against a police headquarters, resulting in 11 police officers killed and several others wounded. The headquarters in question was located in Rask city, where two of the attackers were killed and one was wounded.

Initially, the police force reported the death toll as 12 people, while local sources reported 7 police personnel wounded. Following the attack, military helicopters continuously flew over the skies of Rask, Iranshahr, Sarbaaz, and surrounding areas.

According to the state news agency IRNA, the group “Jaish al-Adl” claimed responsibility for the attack through a statement. This group has repeatedly clashed with the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and border guards in Sistan and Baluchestan, and has taken some hostage or killed them.

Last month (November), the Islamic Republic’s judiciary announced the execution of three people in Zahedan who had cooperated with Jaish al-Adl. Additionally, media affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards attributed the attack on worshippers in Zahedan in October 2022, which became known as “Bloody Friday,” to Jaish al-Adl without presenting any evidence, a claim rejected by Maulvi Abdolhamid, the Sunni imam of Friday prayers in Zahedan, after which Islamic Republic officials alluded to the role of domestic factors in this massacre.
