Prominent Women Worldwide Call for Islamic Republic’s Expulsion from UN Commission on the Status of Women

A group of renowned women who are members of the UN Commission on the Status of Women have called for the expulsion of the Islamic Republic from this commission through a letter.

The UN Commission on the Status of Women is a subsidiary body of the United Nations established with the aim of achieving gender equality and promoting women’s advancement, and is considered the highest oversight authority in the field of women within the organization.

The Islamic Republic formally began a four-year term in the UN Commission on the Status of Women at the beginning of this year, but this membership has faced strong negative reactions from human rights and women’s rights activists.

In a letter prepared and released for the expulsion of the Islamic Republic by this commission, reference is made to recent events in Iran that have been accompanied by violent suppression of public protests, and the Iranian government is condemned in the letter, stating that this tyrannical regime should be disqualified due to its systematic and long-standing oppression of women as well as its recent brutality against protesters.

The signatories of this letter emphasized that for every day the Islamic Republic remains in the UN Commission on the Status of Women, this institution loses its credibility.

The expulsion of these perpetrators and violators of women’s rights from such a foundation should have been done years ago. Now this correct action is being achieved through the efforts of many Iranian women in the diaspora.

These prominent women also emphasized that now is the time for world leaders to stand in solidarity with Iranian women and girls to support their rights.

Among the signatories of this letter are prominent figures such as Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, and Laura Bush, who are three former First Ladies of America. Also, Malala Yousafzai, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Oprah Winfrey, television presenter and producer, Chrystia Freeland, former Canadian Foreign Minister, and Christina Figures, former Executive Secretary of the UN Convention, are also among the signatories of this letter. In addition to these prominent figures, the letter has been signed by 21,000 other people.

The signatories of this letter also declared: In solidarity with Iranian women and girls who bravely protest for their human rights, we condemn the violence and brutal repression by security forces and demand the immediate expulsion of the Islamic Republic of Iran from the UN Commission on the Status of Women.
