Recruitment and ‘Guidance’ of Iran’s Elite Students to Turkey ‘Continues’

While Iran’s Ministry of Education previously called for halting the dispatch of elite Iranian students to Turkey, an official from the ministry stated that examinations are still being held in some areas of Iran to recruit and ‘guide’ Iran’s most elite students to Turkey.

Mehdi Fiyazi, head of the Center for International Affairs and Schools Abroad at the Ministry of Education, told the ISNA news agency on Monday, September 21, that Turkey continues to hold exams such as the ‘YÖS’ exam in Tabriz and some other areas of Iran and ‘unofficially’ recruits Iranian high school graduates.

The report states that a Turkish institution ‘that was based in Tehran, with the help of the Turkish Foundation of Culture and by luring students from the most remote corners of Iran, called them to Tehran and among these elite students, held a scientific competition and awarded scholarships to the most elite for Turkey.’

According to reports previously published, most of these students came from deprived and remote areas of Iran to participate in the exam in Tehran and compete for admission to Turkey’s ‘Imam Khomeini’ high schools.

Mehdi Fiyazi added on Monday that the dispatch of students, especially ‘in fields of dentistry and medicine which have many applicants,’ is taking place.

Fiyazi continued that the Ministry of Education has warned the Ministry of Culture to stop the activities of Turkish institutions operating in this field, and the Islamic Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also ‘followed up several times.’

The head of the Center for International Affairs and Schools Abroad had first told the state news agency IRNA in mid-June that the Tehran branch of the Turkish Yunus Emre Institution is registering Iranian students in schools in Turkey.

So far, multiple reports have been published about the migration of students, graduates, and professors from Iranian universities.

The newspaper ‘Donya-ye Eqtesad’ on Sunday, September 20, published a report based on statistics without disclosing its source, stating that ‘160 heart specialists migrated over the past year’ from Iran, adding that over the past four years, ‘16,000 general practitioners’ have also emigrated from the country.

However, there are no precise statistics regarding the migration of Iranian students abroad.

The recruitment of Iranian students to Turkish schools is occurring as in recent years, migration of Iranians to Turkey and property purchases by them in the country have increased dramatically.
