Lack of Proper Supervision Leads to Cold Weapon Altercation at Qazolhesar Prison

HRANA News Agency – On the morning of Thursday, July 14, 2022, following a conflict in Ward 2 of Qazolhesar Prison in Karaj, one inmate was seriously injured and subsequently transferred to a medical center outside the prison. Despite the prohibition on bringing knives and other implements that can be used as cold weapons into the prison, the lack of oversight and occasional corruption within the prison’s administrative departments has facilitated the smuggling or manufacturing of cold weapons inside the facility.

According to a report by HRANA News Agency, the news organ of the Human Rights Activists in Iran collective, on the morning of Thursday, July 14, 2022, following a conflict in Ward 2 of Qazolhesar Prison in Karaj, one person was injured. The inmate in question was transferred to a hospital outside the prison due to serious injuries inflicted by a cold weapon.

The identity of this inmate has been confirmed by HRANA as “Seyyed Jalal Vafaei.”

According to received reports, following the altercation in Hall 2, Ward 2 of the prison, Mr. Vafaei sustained approximately 15 stab wounds.

Although the entry of knives and other implements that can be used as cold weapons into the prison is prohibited, the lack of oversight and occasional corruption among prison personnel have facilitated the smuggling or manufacturing of cold weapons within the facility.

Under the prison’s internal regulations, the manufacturing and possession of weapons in prison is considered a crime, and prison authorities are obligated to conduct regular inspections in accordance with the regulations of the prison organization to ensure the absence of such dangerous items. The failure to enforce proper supervision of law implementation has resulted in such altercations and has endangered the lives of inmates.

Previously, HRANA had reported on the problems faced by inmates held in Ward 2 of Qazolhesar Prison in Karaj. Inmates held in this ward face numerous problems, including severe overcrowding, lack of ventilation and cooling systems, as well as inadequate medical care.
