Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj: Increase in Number of Inmates Transferred to Solitary Cells for Execution of Death Sentences

Hrana News Agency – Three more inmates at Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj were transferred to solitary cells on Monday, September 5, 2022, for the execution of their death sentences. With the inclusion of these individuals, the number of inmates transferred to solitary cells at Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj for execution of death sentences has increased to 11 people.

According to Hrana News Agency, the news organ of the Iranian Human Rights Activists Network, on Monday, September 5, 2022, three more inmates at Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj were transferred to solitary cells at the prison.

The transfer of these inmates to solitary cells was carried out for the execution of their death sentences.

Also, on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, eight inmates at Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj had been transferred to solitary cells at the prison. With the inclusion of these individuals, the number of inmates transferred to solitary cells at Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj for execution of death sentences has increased to 11 people.

This comes as on Tuesday, September 6, a number of families and relatives of inmates sentenced to death gathered in front of the Karaj Revolutionary Court building in protest, holding placards with the message “Do not execute,” demanding that the execution of their loved ones’ death sentences be halted.

There is no information available regarding the charges against these inmates for which they were previously sentenced to death by judicial authorities; however, it should be noted that Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj is a detention facility for those accused of crimes including murder and armed robbery.

Further details of this incident, including the identity of the inmates in question, are still under review by Hrana.

According to the annual report of the Statistics, Publications and Works Center of the Iranian Human Rights Activists Network for the period from January 1, 2021 to December 20, 2021, at least 299 citizens were executed and 85 others were sentenced to death. Among those executed, mention should be made of the execution of 4 child offenders.

According to the same report, more than 88 percent of executions carried out in Iran are not announced by the government or judicial authorities, which human rights organizations refer to as “secret” executions.
