Tehran Police Official on Woman’s Beating in Latyan: She Resisted and Caused the Incident

The Deputy Commander of Tehran’s Law Enforcement responded to the violent behavior of several police officers toward a woman in the Latyan Dam area. Despite acknowledging that “the arrest method used by the named officers was contrary to police training and is not approved,” he attempted to justify the violent conduct, stating that she and her companion “resisted the officers and caused this incident to occur.”

In a video released Friday, Ordibehesht 16, on social media, a police officer, along with two other officers, forcibly placed a beaten woman into a police vehicle.

In response to the video’s release, the Tehran Police Information Center announced on Saturday that the Tehran Police Commander had ordered a “special investigation” into the incident.

Morad Moradi, the Deputy Commander of Social Security for Greater Tehran, provided details about the incident on Sunday, Ordibehesht 18, stating that “law enforcement officers stationed at the Latyan Dam checkpoint, after observing dangerous movements by a vehicle, ordered the driver to stop, but he ignored the police order and fled the scene.”

According to Mr. Moradi, a quantity of “grass” was found in the vehicle, and the resistance of the two female passengers against arrest led to their confrontation with the officers.

Violent police behavior toward citizens during arrest, and even firing warning shots or directly at them, has occurred before.

In late Farvardin, a video was released on social media showing a law enforcement officer in Mashhad directly shooting at a citizen who was approaching him, injuring him.

The Binealud Law Enforcement Commander, in explaining the incident, identified the citizen who was shot at as the driver of a car who was driving at an illegal and dangerous speed and had resisted police warnings to stop.
