Seventh Day of Contract Teachers’ Gathering in Protest Over Employment Status

The protest by dozens of contract teachers in Tehran continued on Monday, the 9th of Esfand, for the seventh consecutive day.

The gathering took place in front of the State Organization for Civil Service, with contract teachers demanding an end to their “uncertain” employment status and the issuance of their formal appointments.

These teachers are protesting the “failure to fulfill” the promises made by officials regarding their “ambiguous” employment situation and the low level of their salaries.

Some of these contract teachers told the ILNA news agency: “Our income is low. Some teachers did not even have the money for travel to Tehran, and their colleagues helped collect funds for them.”

These teachers say they are not demanding anything beyond their rights and are asking officials to keep their promises.

According to ILNA news agency, these teachers have demanded the implementation of a plan called “Determining the Employment of Contract Teachers and Literacy Promotion Activists,” which was approved by parliament in 2009.

On Sunday, the 8th of Esfand, these contract teachers held a gathering in front of the Islamic Consultative Assembly building, calling on parliament representatives to address their situation.

Last week, these contract teachers held a multi-day sit-in and gathering in front of the Ministry of Education building, demanding that officials pay attention to their living conditions and low salaries.

In recent months, various parts of Iran have witnessed protest gatherings held by teachers, workers, retirees, and other segments of society.

These gatherings, mostly held in protest of living conditions, have in some cases been met with suppression and arrests of protesters by government forces.
