Child Marriage; 16-Year-Old Girl Commits Self-Immolation in Delgan

On Tuesday, the 28th of Dey, a 16-year-old girl, a victim of child marriage in Delgan city, committed self-immolation and died. The physical and psychological harms resulting from marriage during childhood inflict irreparable blows to the lives of these children. Pregnancies under 18 years of age, maternal mortality, depression, suicide attempts, divorce, school dropout, and the persistence of the cycle of cultural and economic poverty are among these harms.

According to Hrana news agency, citing the Baloch Activists Campaign, on Tuesday, the 28th of Dey, 1400, a 16-year-old girl in Delgan city committed self-immolation and died.

According to the report, the identity of this teenage girl, who was forcibly married by her family to a 40-year-old man a few months ago, has been identified as “Z-Irandegani.”

Based on this report, the reason for this child’s act of self-immolation was domestic violence and abuse by her husband.

The high statistics of child marriages, where children marry before reaching mental and intellectual maturity, indicate the prevalence of this phenomenon in Iran. The marriage age in Iran is determined based on “sexual maturity,” while according to experts, sexual maturity is only one aspect of human complete maturity. Development, awareness, education, and freedom in choice are the most fundamental and humane conditions for forming a family.
