Civil Activist Narges Mohammadi Summoned to Return to Prison

Narges Mohammadi, a civil activist and human rights defender, who was temporarily released from prison two weeks ago to undergo a coronary artery procedure, is required to return to Qarchak Prison on Tuesday, March 8, to serve the remainder of her sentence.

Taghi Rahmani, a political activist and husband of Narges Mohammadi, told Radio Farda that the return to prison has been notified to Ms. Mohammadi’s lawyer, and according to judicial authorities, this civil activist must return to serve her sentence in the worst prison.

Referring to the opinion of physicians that Narges Mohammadi “requires a longer recovery period,” he says that during her imprisonment, the civil activist has contracted other diseases such as paralysis and muscle spasms that she did not previously have, and coronary artery disease is an illness that has been imposed upon her.

Taghi Rahmani, pointing to the pressures exerted by security institutions on prisoners, says that Narges Mohammadi had to go on a hunger strike in prison in order to be able to speak with her children, and the judiciary in this situation is “trying the family” and is taking revenge on the prisoner to make her obedient and submissive.

Ms. Mohammadi was arrested on November 16 during a raid by security forces on a mourning ceremony at the mausoleum of Ibrahim Ketabdar, one of the victims of November 2019, and after 64 days of solitary confinement in the security ward 209 of Evin, she was transferred to Qarchak Varamin Prison in late December.

Taghi Rahmani announced on March 1 in a Twitter message that a final sentence of eight years and two months imprisonment, flogging, and social deprivation was handed down to Ms. Mohammadi at Qarchak Varamin Prison.

Narges Mohammadi, in another case whose final judgment was issued last October, has been sentenced to 30 months imprisonment and 80 lashes.

Taghi Rahmani, in his conversation with Radio Farda, referring to this case, says that the 30 months of imprisonment was because Narges Mohammadi filed a complaint against the prison warden, but her complaint was rejected, and instead the prison warden’s complaint against Narges Mohammadi was processed: “That is, the prison warden both insulted, was disrespectful, assaulted, and became the complainant.”

According to Taghi Rahmani, Narges Mohammadi also does not consider the issued sentences just and will lodge complaints both inside and outside the country.
