Iran: Unimpeded Oil Sales Among Most Important Issues in Vienna Talks

Iran’s Foreign Minister said on the first day of the new round of Vienna negotiations that lifting sanctions is one of the most important issues in these talks. He emphasized that Iran must be able to sell its oil without any obstacles and obtain its revenues.

Hossein Amirabdollahian, Foreign Minister of the thirteenth government, told reporters on Monday, December 27th, that the Islamic Republic has set aside the June 2021 document (the sixth round of talks during the Rouhani administration) and has reached a new joint document with the negotiating parties. According to him, these documents, which are referred to as “December 1st and December 15th,” deal with both Iran’s nuclear program and the issue of sanctions.

Iran’s Foreign Minister emphasized that one of the most important issues in relation to these negotiations is that Iran be able to sell its oil without any obstacles and that oil revenues be deposited in foreign currency in Iranian bank accounts. He said Iran must be able to benefit from all the economic advantages envisioned in the JCPOA.

The eighth round of JCPOA negotiations will resume on Monday in Vienna at the level of deputies and political directors of the foreign ministers of Iran and P5+1. According to the Fars News Agency quoting Amirabdollahian, “discussion of guarantees and verification” will be among the topics of conversation.

Said Khatibzadeh, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, also said at a press conference that the three European parties to the negotiations are well aware of Iran’s expectations: “If everyone comes to Vienna with the agenda that talks will reach a conclusion in the shortest possible time and have serious commitment to reaching an agreement, we will achieve good results.”
